Tips For Overcoming Insecurity at School

IMG_7544

School has begun; so much is new and unfamiliar. Classmates, teachers, schedules, not to mention finding your way to the right classroom, the list goes on and on!

Thoughts of inadequacy are flying through your head at a rapid pace. You are trying to keep focused, but you are concerned if others will notice how SCARED you are!

Here are some tips that will help you overcome those feelings of insecurity.

TRUTH: Insecurity is invisible! No one can see what is going on inside of you but you. Because you feel insecure doesn’t mean you are a walking billboard publically displaying “insecurity”.

RELAX: Everyone is nervous, so you fit right in. Other students have the same fears, concerns and doubts racing through their minds as well. They are so concerned about their own insecurities, they aren’t aware of your insecurities.

REACH OUT TO SOMEONE ELSE: Just like you, others are waiting for someone to make the first move; to say hello, extend a smile; ask what class they are going to. Make a decision to be the one to reach out first, it is a great way to make friends, and silence those voices in your head.

SMILE: Let others know that you are warm and friendly, even if you are feeling scared, a smile is contagious! Your smile could brighten someone’s day. I challenge you to take notice of how many ‘return smiles’ you receive by being the initiator.

PRAY: Don’t leave for school without prayer! Be in agreement with God’s promises for your day. Pray for your teachers, classmates, friends and safety. Leaving for school with prayer is a wonderful discipline!

My Prayer For YOU: May you know you are loved, and special. May angels surround you to keep you safe. No weapon formed against you shall prosper. May you be a bright light shinning throughout your school, may others be attracted to you, so you can let the love of Jesus work through you to impact their lives. May you have favor with your teachers and friends. May you know that God will never leave you or forsake you. May God’s wisdom flow to you as you learn and study. May you be disciplined in all your studies and activities. May the joy of the Lord be your strength. May you overcome any insecurity by embracing the truth that you are AMAZING!

As a new youth pastor, I love to find relevant resources for my youth to access outside of group/church. I love your blogs! Your words are valuable and empathetic. I read your story and am inspired by how you took to the streets to meet the youth where they were. That is the kind of ministry I, and my youth want! To get outside the building and build relationship, fulfill needs and show God’s love. Thank you…I will be visiting your blog often and resourcing it to my girls!
